Whenever you are first dropped on into Minecraft's strange new blocky world you will feel confused. But don't worry, just take it in stride and you will be okay. When you are at the main menu you can name your level and enter a seed, which is a level code. If you leave this blank you will be put into a random world, be it deserts or the arctic, this is your world and you better make the best of it.
The first thing you probably want to do is find a tree, which should be somewhere nearby. If you keep looking and cannot find a tree, you might want to go to the main menu and get a different randomized level. When you do find a tree you will want to hold down the left mouse and the tree block will slowly get holes in it. Keep hitting it until it disappears and drops a little block that is bouncing on the ground near you. You will want to walk over it and you should automatically pick it up and it should appear on your toolbar on the bottom. You can use your scroll wheel on your mouse or if you are using a track pad you can click the number corresponding to it's location on the tool bar.
You will want to continue chopping down trees until you have at least 10 or twenty to get a god start in the world. Once you have a reasonable amount you will press I on your keyboard to pull up your Inventory and you should drag the wood blocks up to the box on the LEFT of your character and drop them there. On the left of the four boxes should be one box that should have a block that looks similar to wood. Drag them into any of the vast blank squares below you character but above your toolbar.
